First group from the United States 8th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division along with Stryker armoured vehicles arrived at the Defence Forces base in Tapa.

“We want to share our experiences and knowledge as a mechanized unit with the Estonian units, who will also be receiving infantry fighting vehicles in addition to the armoured transport vehicles,” said company commander Captain Theo Kliensorge, his words reflect the upcoming arrival of 28 ton U.S. Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, which are fitted with 25 millimetre rapid firing cannons in addition to the already arrived tracked vehicles.

“For example moving from point A to point B without damaging civilian infrastructure is a part of an armoured unit’s everyday life, an aspect that the Estonian 1st Infantry Brigade will also be involved in. Since we are already here we can prepare things a bit in advance,” said Captain Kliensorge.

The first vehicles to arrive in Tapa were 3 Stryker 18 ton wheeled armoured transport vehicles along with associated support vehicles. The rest of the company’s Stryker armoured vehicles and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles will be arriving in Estonia at the end of September and beginning of October. In addition to the armoured transport vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles, necessary command and support vehicles will be arriving to Estonia as well in the near future.

The 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry regiment unit arriving to Estonia is based in of Fort Hood in Texas and part of the 1st Brigade, 1St Cavalry Division. The 8th Cavalry regiment has participated in decisive battles in WWII as well as taking part in military operations in Korea and Vietnam. They have also taken part  in missions in Bosnia and Iraq.

The 1st Infantry Brigade is the Estonian Defence Forces main manoeuvre unit, where the majority of conscript units train during their mandatory service. The rapid response enabled Scouts Battalion, consisting of professional soldiers is also a part of the 1st Infantry Battalion who will be receiving the CV-90 infantry fighting vehicles.

The United States armoured unit will be rotationally taking over the currently deployed 173rd Airborne Brigade unit who have been training with the Estonian Defence Forces.
